Ways to Go Green

There are many ways to GO GREEN in your home or business and one of the easiest ways is through lighting. Lighting technology advances every day and with those advancements comes great opportunities. Those opportunities result in saving you money and helping the environment! There is almost always a way to GO GREEN with your lighting, but here are several of the most common methods:

  1. CFL TwistReplace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs
There are compact fluorescents made to replace just about every incandescent light bulb. Compact fluorescents provide the equivalent amount of light that an incandescent will, but uses much less energy. For example you can replace a 60 watt incandescent with a 13 watt compact fluorescent. By doing this you will get a light bulb that lasts up to 10 times longer, uses 75% less energy and provides the same or better amount of light.

  2. Replace your HID light fixtures with linear fluorescent light fixtures
warehouse photoMany commercial facilities use HID light bulbs (metal halide or high pressure sodium) as their primary light source and are unaware of the multiple benefits associated with retrofitting these fixtures to a linear fluorescent fixture. By replacing your HID fixtures with linear fluorescent fixtures you will save 50% or more in energy costs, have longer lasting product, increased light levels, improved light quality and instant on/off capability to name a few. There are also significant rebates available from utility companies making this an excellent method to GO GREEN.

  3. Replace your magnetic fluorescent ballasts with electronic fluorescent ballastssylvania-Electronic-Ballast
Fluorescent fixtures were originally manufactured with magnetic ballasts and T12 lamps, but in recent years the electronic ballast was introduced because of the energy savings that occurs from using this technology. By converting your magnetic ballast to electronic ballasts you will often see an energy savings of 40% or greater and increased light output. In addition, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 requires that by the year 2010 magnetic ballasts will be phased out of production meaning that you will have to convert or buy electronic ballasts going forward. With that in mind there are rebates available from local utility companies making now a great time to GO GREEN and convert your magnetic ballasts to electronic ballasts.

  4. Replace your light switches with occupancy sensors.
photoOccupancy sensors are a great way to save energy as they are used to turn the lights on when a space is occupied and turn them off when the space is unoccupied. The energy savings potential for occupancy sensors is huge, anywhere from 30-90% energy savings!

  5. LED Lighting
photoThis is the newest technology available in lighting and is on the verge of becoming the next generation of lighting. LED’s can reduce energy consumption up to 90% and last 100,000 hours. While not every application is covered yet, there are several areas where LED’s are a great energy saving option.
