Premier Lighting Case Study: Office Building LED Retrofit

Smiths Medical Supply Office Building

Customer Profile:

Smiths Medical is a leading global manufacturer of specialty medical devices, and has been in business for over 65 years, operating in 30 countries with sales to 120 countries. They employ nearly 8,000 people in six continents.

Goal:

Smiths Medical’s growth led the company to seek larger space for their Minnesota-based world head-quarters. A key component to a new location was energy efficiency so the company engaged the consulting firm of Burns and Miley to assist them with options and recommendations.

Solution:

Burns and Miley sought the assistance of Premier Lighting for a ballast compatible LED T8 lamp to replace the existing 32 watt fluorescent 3000K T8 lamps. After careful analysis the recommended LED T8 for this application was 17 watts and 5000K.

Results:

Comparisons were made on a floor retrofitted with LED T8 lamps and a floor with fluorescent lamps (see photo below). Also, measurements in both foot candles and lumens were conducted to assess the improvement in lighting levels. The documented results demonstrated a significant illumination improvement from 67% to 84% higher foot-candles throughout. Approximately 5,000 LED T8 lamps replaced the fluorescent T8 lamps on a 1:1 ratio. Furthermore, the nearly 47% reduction in energy qualified Smiths Medical for a significant rebate making for under a 3 year payback.

Has there been issues with employees working in such bright light? We have employees under florescent light that was set up too bright so I can’t imagine how much strain and problems having our spaces illuminated to this intensity would cause. While the LED are brighter at less energy consumption – are they too bright? Are there options to cool the “white light” to a healthy brightness and are their studies as to the best lighting level taken into account?
