Customer Profile:

Long’s Auto Place is proud to have served the St. Paul community since 1981. In 2001, a complete tear-down and construction of a new facility, including service bays, has allowed them the ability to serve their customers even better.

Goal:

The intention of Long’s Auto Place was to install a new outdoor lighting system that better accentuated their vehicles and facility, while also mitigating vandalism attempts.

Assessment:

The outdoor lighting system at Long’s previously consisted of fixtures with metal halide bulbs and ballasts. The majority of these fixtures were using 460W each, while others were 210W and 295W. Outside of the inefficient nature of these metal halides, the amount of lumens put out from these fixtures was rapidly deteriorating. This resulted in not only a less than desirable look for their show cars, but the lack of uniform lighting coverage led to vandalism problems.

Solution:

The number one goal was to vastly improve the light levels in the parking lot, so the metal halide bulbs and ballasts were taken out. The 210W and 295W metal halide fixtures were replaced with LED wallpacks. The 23 fixtures that had 400W metal halides were replaced with new cutting edge LED Area Lights with light levels that blow away the old metal halides and last upwards of 100,000+ hours.

Results:

As evidenced by the before/after pictures, the new LED Wallpacks and LED Area Lights completely transformed the exterior of Long’s Auto. The light levels improved so much so that prior to when the LED fixtures were installed, back light controls had to be optimized to keep the light on the area needed and away from vehicles driving on the busy street nearby.  All told, the energy usage was cut in half while the light levels were improved by 20%+.
