What do you get when you cross three sheets of ice with state, national, and international champion hockey and figure skating teams? Braemar Arena! For hockey and figure skating enthusiasts, Braemar Arena features three indoor, regulation-sized ice sheets and is home to the Braemar-City of Lakes Figure Skating Club, the Edina Hornets hockey teams and the Edina Hockey Association.

Goal:

The City of Edina is always looking for ways to improve their facilities while saving energy. Braemar Arena was originally built in 1965 and has gone through several renovations throughout the years, but it has been awhile since they upgraded to energy-efficient fluorescent lights in the arenas. The fluorescent lighting upgrade reduced their energy consumption and provided adequate light levels, but after several years the replacements started getting costly and the light levels degraded some. With the advancement in LED lighting technology, it is the perfect time to consider upgrading fluorescent fixtures to LED. In addition, they were interested in having more control over their lighting than the fluorescent fixtures allowed. Even more reason to consider LED lighting.

Solution:

Premier Lighting sorted through and analyzed several fixture and layout options before finalizing on an LED high bay fixture that provides more light, saves energy and is controllable from a computer or phone. In addition, given the nature of the activities in the space, the chosen fixture had a heavy-duty lens and wire guard built on to the fixture.

Results:

The new LED fixture reduced the energy consumption by 35% while increasing light levels by over 30%. Moreover, the new LED fixture has a rated life of over 100,000 hours compared to approximately 20,000 hours for the previous fluorescent system. Lastly, each fixture can be individually controlled to dim to any level from any phone or computer system that the customer wants to use. Braemar Arena already has a reputation as one of the premier ice arenas and now with state-of-the-art LED lighting they are in a class of their own.
