Premier Lighting Case Study: Printing Facility LED Retrofit

Customer Profile:

In 1951, Robert Keene and John Chelberg left jobs with a Minneapolis printing firm to pursue a dream. They purchased a printing shop that was for sale in Saint Paul, Minnesota and with only two employees and minimal equipment, they founded The John Roberts Company. The company has expanded its operations multiple times over the years and now operates a 225,000+ square foot facility.

With John Roberts huge facility, they had a multitude of light fixture types. Like anyone retrofitting to LED, they wanted to reap energy savings and improve light levels. But one thing in particularly they lacked was any kind of consistency in terms of light output and color temperature. They were hoping to resolve this issue as well as eliminate costly long-term maintenance associated with fluorescent and HID.

Before: Fluorescent Strip Fixtures

After: Retrofitted to Type B LED T8

John Roberts had various fluorescent fixtures from 2′ and ubends all the way up to 8′. Premier converted them all over to Type B LED T8 lamps in order to bypass the ballast and save on long term maintenance. This also allowed them to achieve a consistent color of 5000K in LED for the entire facility. There were also exterior fixtures which were taken out and replaced with new LED fixtures with sensors. They cut their energy usage in half and improved light levels, all while reaching a payback in just over a year.
