Premier Lighting Case Study: Recycling Center LED Retrofit

eureka-recycling

Customer Profile:

Eureka Recycling’s mission is to help individuals, organizations, and communities understand the significance of zero waste and to provide the resources and education to achieve their own zero-waste goals. Their services and policy work present real world solutions to the social, environmental, and health problems caused by wasting.

Goal:

After years of slowly adding fluorescent fixtures where needed and not removing the original HID highbay fixtures, the already crowded ceiling was getting very cluttered. Over the years with growth demands they’ve had to update and make machine additions which meant the existing lighting wasn’t in the right spot or they had fixtures in unnecessary areas, like on top of a machine. Also the existing fluorescent bulbs and ballast were starting to fail to the point where if unaddressed safety would become a concern. They also had a goal to reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Solution:

With the fluorescent and HID lighting setup becoming increasingly unreliable as well as many of the lights being in the wrong place, Premier suggested scrapping a large portion of the existing fixtures. 131 8′ 6-lamp T8 fixtures and 118 uncommissioned HID highbay fixtures were to be taken out. A lighting optimization layout was then created to provide the road map for the 78 138W LED fixtures to be installed. The remaining 4-lamp fluorescent fixtures that did not need to be replaced were set to be retrofitted with 33W LED retrofit kits.

Before: Fluorescent T8 highbay Fixtures

LED Lumax Fixtures

After: New LED Highbay Fixtures

Results:

Before LED, Eureka Recycling was getting 4-8 footcandles with the existing HID lighting. After the new LED Highbay fixtures were installed, the light levels improved to 15 footcandles on average. While improving the light levels they managed to save 65% on energy by going LED. Premier also helped secure utility rebates for Eureka. All told, their payback on the project was set at just over 4 years.

A lighting retrofit is the process of replacing part or all of an electrical system with lighting and controls that make it use energy more efficiently.
