Customer Profile:

The Lino Lakes YMCA offers group exercise classes, personal training, swim lessons and other great fitness and community building programs. Facilities include great amenities like a fitness center, aquatics (including an indoor pool, sauna and waterslide), gym, outdoor walking trails and much more.

Goal:

The YMCA in Lino Lakes had a primary goal of saving energy and reducing maintenance hours spent with the lighting in the lobby area, as well as to improve the light levels of the locker room areas.

Assessment:

The lobby and locker rooms at the YMCA were being lit by 32W 277v CFL plug-in lamps in a recessed can. The compact fluorescent light bulbs in the recessed cans became brittle over time, making maintenance a pain. They were also interested in the ability to dim the lights which would have been costly with their current set up. Given that the recessed cans are 277 volt, the options to do all this are limited.

Solution:

In order to give the YMCA energy savings, better lighting, less maintenance and dimming with a 277 volt fixture, the decision was made to retrofit the CFL recessed can to an LED insert. Premier proposed the ideal fixture for the job; an LED downlight fixture insert that was a perfect fit, only used 13 watts and also had 0-10v dimming options.

Results:

With the new LED downlight fixtures, the Lino Lakes YMCA had an LED solution that went above and beyond their expectations. They were able to save 59% in energy costs while improving light levels by 20%+. The 0-10v dimming provided a nice touch and will help to save even more energy long-term. They were also able to take advantage of rebate incentives to lower the initial cost. At the end of the day, their payback for the entire project was just over 2 years.
