Premier Lighting Case Study: High School Swimming Pool LED Lighting

Goal:

There were many reasons Spring Lake Park High School wanted Premier Lighting to take a look at their pool lighting to see if LED was a viable option. Not only was the existing lighting setup producing less than ideal results, but re-lamping was a costly endeavor.

Assessment:

The lighting closest to the pool consisted of 1000 watt metal halides and the cylinder lights over the pool stands were 250 watt metal halides. As with all metal halides, a lot of the original light they produced had waned significantly. They also hummed and buzzed loudly, produced a lot of excess heat and had a long warm-up period for the lights to turn on. Perhaps most importantly the lights needed to be re-lamped and in order to do that, a significant amount of time would have to be set aside to bring a lift in to reach the fixtures and change the bulbs.

Solution:

Due to the myriad issues caused by the metal halides, sweeping changes were called for as the metal halide fixtures were taken down and new LED fixtures put up. The 1000 watt metal halide fixtures over the pool were replaced with 220 watt LED pool fixtures, specifically designed for pool environments and the 250 watt metal halide cylinder lights by the stands were replaced with 51 watt LED pool-rated fixtures.

replacing 1000w metal halides with LED fixtures

Before: 1000 watt metal halides above the pool

200 watt LED pool rated fixtures

After: New 220 watt pool-rated LED Fixtures

Results:

The new LED pool-rated fixtures alleviated all the problems found in the metal halides that were once in place. These LED fixtures feature instant-on lighting, so no more long warm-up. The pronounced buzzing and humming coming from the metal halides went away and at a rated lifespan of 60,000, the days of difficult and costly maintenance are over. With yearly energy savings of over $4000, Spring Lake Park High School would reach payback in less than 3 years. HVAC costs were also slated to decrease, as the LED fixtures do not put off the excess heat that metal halides do.

Summary:

  • Reduced Energy Usage
  • Increased Light Quality
  • Increased Light Levels
  • Longer Lasting Products = Reduced Maintenance Costs
  • Light Level and Color Uniformity
  • Enhanced Image
  • Instant On/Off
  • Rebates

As I can see, the lighting near to the pool has vibrant effect, but first of all, you must have a clean pool.
