The City of St. Anthony is just on the outskirts of Northeast Minneapolis. Due in part to it’s proximity to Minneapolis, the community center gym garners plenty of attention. After an analysis of their existing lighting and a retrofit coordinated by Premier Lighting, they are now benefiting from a reduced energy usage of 70% with improved light levels.

Goal:

The City of St. Anthony Village was aiming to utilize rebates to save money on their lighting energy usage in the community center gym. If the lighting could be improved in the process, even better.

Solution:

Upon analyzing the facility’s existing light fixtures, it was found that there were twenty 400-watt metal halides that had lost a significant amount of light since they were originally installed while still using over 460 watts each. In order to brighten the place up and save energy, the plan was to install twenty 130-Watt LED High Bay Fixtures in place of the twenty 400 watt metal halide fixtures. Added features with these fixtures included wire guards and occupancy sensors, neither of which were present with the previous metal halide setup. The wire guards provided the added protection to the fixtures to ensure flying objects would not cause damage and the sensors were installed to keep the lights off when the facility is not in use (additional energy savings).

Results:

Thanks to the new LED High Bay Fixtures and the lighting controls installed with them, the St. Anthony Community Center was able to cut 70% of it’s energy usage. On top of that, their light levels were improved by over 20%. The rebate they were eligible for shaved off a good chunk of the costs associated with the retrofit. The project as a whole achieved a Green Step Best Practice Benchmark for Efficient Existing Public Buildings in Buildings and Lighting.

Also of note is the maintenance savings. The 400-watt metal halides had an estimated life expectancy of 20,000 hours, less than half of how long the LED High Bay Fixtures would last on average. This was crucial when considering the maintenance costs and hassle with bringing in a lift to be able reach the gym ceiling to replace the fixtures.
