After – LED Tape Light

Goal:

The primary goal of this project was to replace the existing compact fluorescent plug-in lamps (CFL) with LED for energy savings. Another major factor was that replacing the CFL ballasts was a difficult and costly task, and one the client hoped to forego with an LED installation.

Assessment:

The front lobby rotunda had a large circle with cove lighting; one on the main floor and one on the level below. The diameter of each circle was approximately 120′ and contained 120 individual 18 watt CFL Lamps with one ballast for each two lamps. As mentioned it was costly to maintain as changing the bulbs and especially the ballasts was a difficult task. In addition the sockets had gotten brittle over time so that was another potential failure point going forward. Given that the lights are on 24/7 that means that they were changing the bulbs about once every year and ballasts/sockets as needed.

Solution:

Considering the issues with the dated fixture that held the CFL PL’s, the best option was to replace the entire fixture rather than retrofit it. With that decided, high output LED tape light was pegged as the replacement. The LED tape light would last much longer, improve light levels, be easier to maintain and save them in energy usage.

Results:

The high output LED tape light that was installed provided the improved light levels they were hoping for. The hassles from the previous CFL fixture were erased; no longer did they have to replace ballasts regularly like with the CFLs. Instead, the LED strip lighting will be set for a number of years, as it has an average lifespan of 50,000 hours. Limited-time rebates were available that helped cut down on initial costs. Full payback on the new lighting system was set to be reached in just over a year!
