Premier Lighting Case Study: Retrofitting Church Lighting to LED

Salem Covenant Church MN

Customer Profile:

Salem Covenant Church of New Brighton, Minnesota is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church, a denomination that gathers believers who celebrate a mutual experience of new life in Christ.

Goal:

Salem Covenant Church hoped to be able to improve their lighting while saving on energy costs. They also wanted to save on maintenance costs as any time the church lighting had to be replaced, that constituted bringing in an expensive lift at least once a year to reach certain areas of the sanctuary.

Assessment:

Salem’s previous lighting setup was comprised of 120 watt PAR38 halogen flood lamps installed in custom-made dimming fixtures with the light shining both up and down. These fixtures were mounted at 20 feet over the pews. The only way to access these fixtures was to remove the pews and use a one-man lift, or to rent a pew straddling lift which is not only very expensive but hard to find.

Solution:

Upon analyzing the sanctuary lighting, it was decided that the halogen PAR38 floods would be replaced with an LED PAR38 flood light that is dimmable down to 5%.

inefficient PAR38 Halogen bulbs

BEFORE: PAR38 halogen floods

PAR38 LED lamps installed at a church

AFTER: LED PAR38 floods

Results:

The replacement LED PAR38 bulbs physically look the same as the halogens that were installed previously, but the new LED bulbs provide 20% more light while saving 85% in energy costs. These LED PAR38’s are expected to last well over the 5 years that they are warrantied for, meaning Salem is able to escape the yearly hassle and cost of bringing in a lift to change the bulbs that are 20 feet over the pews. Salem Covenant Church is slated to reach full payback for their new lighting setup in less than a year.

Summary:

  • Reduced Energy Usage
  • Increased Light Quality
  • Increased Light Levels
  • Longer Lasting Products = Reduced Maintenance Costs
  • Light Level and Color Uniformity
  • Enhanced Image
